Albrecht Haupt (architect)

Albrecht Haupt (born March 18, 1852 in Büdingen , † October 27, 1932 in Hanover ; full name: Karl Albrecht Haupt ) was a German architect and university professor .

Haupt was born as the son of the Büdingen grammar school director Dr. Georg Haupt and his wife Mathilde, b. Schmidt, born. His brother was Richard Haupt . He was the cousin of Herman Haupt . Albrecht Haupt attended the Wolfgang-Ernst-Gymnasium in Büdingen from April 16, 1861 until his Abitur on September 11, 1869 . He then studied in Giessen , Karlsruhe and Hanover . In 1869 he became a member of the Gießen fraternity Germania . In 1875 he initially worked as a freelance architect and then worked from 1876 to 1878 for the Baden Palace Construction Office in Karlsruhe and Büdingen. In 1878 the company moved to Hanover. After working for two years with Edwin Oppler , he started his own business and became a private lecturer at the Technical University of Hanover . In 1893 he received his doctorate in philosophy , in 1894 he became an honorary professor . In 1923 he finally became a full professor and until his retirement in 1926 taught German, Spanish and Portuguese architecture as well as German Renaissance and Germanic architecture. Around 1907 he presented a reconstruction drawing for the mausoleum of Theodoric the Great in Ravenna and took the view that the parapet grilles that had previously existed on the upper floor of the tomb could have been the bronze grilles that Charlemagne had procured from Ravenna along with other historical components he had it built into the Aachen Palatine Chapel .

In addition to an extensive series of publications on the architecture of the 16th to 18th centuries, Haupt made a name for himself through the design and renovation of numerous buildings. His works include the restoration of the Leibnizhaus in Hanover, the construction of Wiligrad Palace and the construction of the urn grove at the Engesohde city cemetery . In 1903/04 he led the renovation of the Stiftkirche in Fischbeck.

In addition, Haupt was co-founder of the Hanover Arts and Crafts Museum and the Association of German Architects , which he chaired from 1903 to 1908.
