Erling Jepsen (born May 14, 1956 in Gram , Denmark ) is a Danish writer and playwright .

Life

Erling Jepsen was born the son of a milkman and a housewife in the small town of Gram. He grew up in a strongly Christian and, according to his own statement, above all dysfunctional family. After attending the grammar school in Haderslev , he moved out at the age of 16 and finally graduated from the Århus Akademi in 1975. He then moved to Copenhagen , where he began writing radio plays for the radio. He finally made his debut in 1977 with Kiks med kniv og gaffel . After he finally wrote several scripts in the early 1980s that were made into films, Jepsen established himself as a playwright from the 1990s with plays such as Elskende i et fodgængerfelt , Når bare det kommer fra hjetzt and Snefnugget og øjeæblet . He finally made his novel debut in 1999 with Ingen grund til overdramatisering .

His first great literary success was Jepsen's 2002 novel Kunsten at græde i kor . The autobiographically-inspired drama about an incest family sold over 50,000 copies in Denmark that same year and was eventually translated into several languages, including Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch, Spanish and Icelandic. The book was published in German by Suhrkamp Verlag in 2007 after a translation by Ulrich Sonnenberg under the title The Art of Weeping in the Choir .

So far, three novels by Jepsen have been filmed. Henrik Ruben Genz filmed the two books Biroller and Frygtelig lykkelig . The former was released in 2013 under the title Undskyld jeg forstyrrer and the latter under the title of the same name in Danish cinemas. Both films together received over 35 nominations for the two Danish national film awards Bodil and Robert . Peter Schønau Fog directed the 2002 book Kunsten at græde i kor for the film drama of the same name, which was shown in 2006 at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival, among other places . The film received 15 Bodil and Robert nominations and four awards.

Today he lives with his wife and daughter in an apartment on Amager .
