action

Hermann Hiller is married to a woman who is a great support to him. While the hitherto unsuccessful composer sits fervently on his new work, an opera, his wife works day and night on embroidery with which she makes a living for the two of them. Her husband does not notice how much this work strains his wife's eyes. Night work, in particular, has an impact on her eyes due to an insidious illness, eyesight fading a little more every day. After all, the director of the opera house and his Kapellmeister find that Hiller's new work is of excellent quality. In fact, Hiller's opus is bought and suddenly turns him into a wealthy man. But he is all the more worried about his wife, who threatens to lose her eyesight more and more. Hiller begs the eye specialist to do everything possible.

All efforts are unsuccessful, Hiller's wife goes blind. On the day of the premiere, Hermann Hiller leads his wife to the opera and, moved, she listens to the sounds of the premiere. In the frenzy of success, Hiller begins to neglect his wife and lets himself be captured by the flirtation attempts of the main actress in his opera, a certain Mademoiselle Renée. Hiller's wife does not go unnoticed, especially since her husband goes out more and more often during the day and goes for walks with that young lady. During a car tour, the car stops, and Hermann helps the chauffeur to top up the gasoline. He comes too close to the canister with his burning cigarette, the canister explodes and a flame hisses in his face. Hiller backs away with a shrill scream and is brought home with severe burns. There his blind wife takes care of him and watches over his bed day and night. Ms. Hiller pleaded that her husband should not fare like her and that he should lose his sight.

Weeks of convalescence have passed and Mademoiselle Renée has long since said goodbye to the life of her composer. But Mrs. Hiller continues to take care of her husband and one day the bandage will be removed from his eyes. With great care he opens his eyes, then he hears a cheer: he can see again! Full of enthusiasm he kneels in front of his faithful wife, but she painfully remembers the time when he lost himself with that opera singer in a healthy state. She begins to sob, afraid that she will lose him to this woman again. But her husband has learned something from all of this; he promises to be her eyes. She hears his words with great gratitude.
