The Stephenville International Airport (formerly Ernest Harmon Air Force Base ) is an airport in Stephenville (Newfoundland) in Canada .
history
The airport was built in 1941 by the United States Army Air Forces and operated as a military airfield by the United States Air Force until 1966 . It was named after Major General Ernest N. Harmon . The United Kingdom received warships from the United States under the destroyer-for-base agreement .
The airport has been under Canadian civilian administration since 1966. It was intended as a possible space shuttle emergency landing site .
After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA and the subsequent closure of the airspace, Stephenville also served as a landing airport for the aircraft diverted to Canada ( Operation Yellow Ribbon ).
