E. Vilches (ca.1910)

Ernesto de Vilches Domínguez de Alcahúd (born February 6, 1879 in Tarragona , † December 8, 1954 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish actor and director .

Life

Vilches, whose father was a journalist , spent his time as a soldier in the Philippines during the final phase of Spanish rule over the islands. He then traveled to Mexico, Guatemala and New York.

After his return to Spain at the beginning of the new century, he became an actor at the Madrid Teatro de la comedia and together with José Tallavi founded his own theater company, with which, for example, Jacinto Benaventes La Malquerida was performed on all stages of the Spanish-speaking world. He performed with Irene López de Heredia as a partner for twelve years .

Two attempts in the emerging film business - one very early in 1909 and El golfo in 1917 - were unsuccessful, so Vilches initially limited himself to the stage. In 1930 he was one of the first Spaniards to star in Spanish language versions of films in Hollywood , making Cascarrabias his breakthrough in the film business. Further films from the production program followed.

In 1931 he directed the film El comediante , which he also wrote. In the years that followed, his artistic demands only allowed him to accept two films, then he returned to Spain. There he founded a new theater group, to which Alfredo Mayo belonged, with whom he staged plays and made a film, El 113 (1935). When the Spanish Civil War broke out , he went to Argentina .

There he made about twenty films until 1947 when he moved to Mexico. He has now appeared in Spanish-language productions in various countries. During a stay in his home country he was hit by a taxi in 1954; he died two days later.
