Ernesto de Fiori (born December 12, 1884 in Rome , Italy , † April 24, 1945 in São Paulo , Brazil ) was an Austrian sculptor , painter and draftsman.

Life

Ernesto de Fiori, whose father was Italian and whose mother was German-Austrian , studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Gabriel von Hackl from 1903 to 1905 . After his return to Rome in 1905 he practiced painting and lithography , inspired by the work of the German artist Otto Greiner . A formative and therefore noteworthy long-term friendship arose in 1909 in Munich with Carl and Thea Sternheim .

From 1911 to 1914, de Fiori lived and worked in Paris and was among the Swiss and German artists and intellectuals who lived there. He met regularly at the Café du Dôme with Hermann Haller , Karl Hofer , Wilhelm Lehmbruck , Heinrich Ehmsen and other artists. His first sculptural works were also created in Paris.

During the First World War he was suspected of espionage for Germany and was briefly imprisoned in France in 1915. In 1915 he returned to Germany, took on German citizenship and was a soldier until 1917.

De Fiori moved to Zurich in 1917 and lived there until 1921. During his time in Switzerland, he dealt with Dadaism . In 1921 he moved to Berlin , where his art was inspired by the New Objectivity ; he joined the "Free Secession" there. He worked as a feature writer for daily newspapers. Artistically he had connections to Italy to the " Novecento ".

During this time, from the mid-1920s to the early 1930s, Ernesto de Fiori was a sought-after portraitist in Berlin. At the mediation of the art dealer Alfred Flechtheim , whom he had met in Paris, he carried out commissions for public figures from the fields of culture, sport and politics. His busts of the film diva Marlene Dietrich or the boxing idol Jack Dempsey were highly regarded for their “spontaneous portraiture”. The bronze bust of Louise Dumont , which was placed in the center of the Louise Dumont memorial stone in Düsseldorf in 1955 , also dates from this period . Via Flechtheim, Fiori's self-portrait in bronze from 1923 was acquired by Karl Koetschau in 1924 in the Museum Kunstpalast .

In 1936 he traveled to Brazil for family reasons and settled in São Paulo , where he wrote articles for Italian and German emigrant magazines. In 1938 he realized a number of sculptures, some of which he created on behalf of the public. In Brazil he mainly painted and only created a few sculptures (especially portraits), in some cases he repeated old motifs. He lived and worked in São Paulo until his death on April 24, 1945.

His works are internationally known; for example, they were shown posthumously at documenta 1 in Kassel in 1955 .

Part of the artist's estate was discovered more than 60 years after his death in the attic of a Bavarian inn. Works from it will be auctioned in December 2014.
