Ernie Hawkins (* 1947 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania as Ernest Leroy Hawkins ) is an American blues musician . With his acoustic guitar he follows in the footsteps of his teacher Reverend Gary Davis .

biography

As a teenager, Hawkins played acoustic guitar, mandolin, and banjo bluegrass and country music before succumbing to the pre-war blues of Blind Willie McTell , Mississippi John Hurt , Willie Johnson , Skip James , Blind Blake and others. After high school, he went in 1965 to New York , where he of Reverend Gary Davis , the Ragtime learned -Gitarrenspiel.

In 1969 Hawkins began studying philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh . In 1973 he went to Dallas , where he earned a doctorate in psychology. During this academic time he remained active as a blues musician. From 1978 he worked as a professional musician.

After his first album Ragtime Signatures (1980) he moved to Austin ; he performed both solo and with bands. In the mid-1980s he returned to Pittsburgh, where he played lead guitar for ten years with R&B band Gary Belloma and the Blues Bombers .

His second album Blues Advice (1996) was a tribute to his teacher Gary Davis; it contained three previously unpublished pieces by Davis. During his career, Hawkins has performed with numerous respected blues musicians, including Son House , Mance Lipscomb , Fred McDowell , Jim Brewer , Reverend Gary Davis and many more. He played on Maria Muldaur's 2001 Grammy- nominated Richland Woman Blues album .
