Ernst Albert (born May 21, 1859 in Cöthen , † November 2, 1936 in Lübeck ) was a German theater actor and biologist . Albert came to Lübeck in 1908 after having been part of the ensemble of the Ducal Court Theater in Altenburg for several years, where he had been awarded the title of court actor . From 1897 to 1898 he directed the first city theater in Kiel .

In Lübeck, he mainly worked as a character comedian at the city theater and at the same time worked as an entomologist for the Natural History Museum . For a time he was also director of the Hansa Theater . In addition, he appeared as a writer of humorous books and plays.

Ernst Albert, about whom numerous anecdotes exist, was one of the Lübeck city originals of the 1920s. He was known as a cylinder man , as he almost always wore a cylinder , inside which he carried just trapped insects impaled on a cork sheet. The top hat was so typical of him that he would occasionally put it on the tram rails to ask the tram driver to wait a moment while he was shopping in a nearby shop. The captain Karl Ludwig Heidtmann (1914–1998) from Berkenthin had learned as a boy that Ernst Albert got into a bad mess during his apprenticeship and traveling years and was able to run away as a chimney sweep - capped with a cylinder. He then swore that he would only wear top hats for the rest of his life.

Although Ernst Albert deliberately presented himself as an operetta-like personality in Lübeck , he was regarded in specialist circles as a recognized entomologist who, among other things, was the first to document the sporadic occurrence of potentially malaria-transmitting species of mosquitoes in northern Germany.
