Ernst Batzer (born January 12, 1882 in Metz , † August 19, 1938 in Munich ) was a German teacher, museum and archive director and local history researcher.

Life

He was born in Metz in Lorraine in 1882 as the son of Robert Batzer, a doctor of medicine, and his wife Josefine Santlus. After graduation, he received his doctorate in 1910 at the University of Heidelberg to the Dr. phil. The subject of his dissertation was The Manuscripts of the Form Collection of Richard von Pofi . He became a teacher at the Oberrealschule in Offenburg and later received the title of professor.

In 1917 he succeeded Carl Frowin Mayer as head of the municipal collection and the municipal archive of Offenburg. He was particularly interested in the regional history of Baden-Württemberg as well as in regional customs and folk art. Under his leadership, the museum's collections continued to develop, with a focus on natural history, mineralogy, art and folklore. In addition, he dealt intensively with the Roman history of Offenburg.

From 1912 Ernst Batzer was secretary of the Historical Association for Central Baden, of which he was a founding member in 1910. He later also became editor-in-chief of the magazine Die Ortenau. Appointed journal of the Historical Association for Central Baden . He also became a member of the Baden Historical Commission.

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists in 1933, he came under increasing pressure because of his negative attitude towards the new rulers and because of his Jewish wife Albertine, born Weiner, and was replaced as museum director. He died on a trip in 1938.

The chemist Hans Batzer , born in 1919, was his son.
