Ernst Becker (privy councilor)

Ernst Ferdinand Vollrad Becker (born July 9, 1826 in Darmstadt , † September 2, 1888 in Bensheim-Auerbach ) was a German court official, privy councilor and music lover and the brother of the painter August Becker .

Life

Becker studied camera science at the University of Gießen from 1843 and physics and chemistry from 1847 . During his studies he developed a close relationship with Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , who had been married to Queen Victoria of England since 1840 .

From 1850 to 1861 Becker was educator at Queen Victoria's court in London . In 1862 he returned to Darmstadt and became secretary to Princess Alice of Great Britain and Ireland (1843–1878), a daughter of the Queen. In 1864 he was a co-founder and member of the board of the "Building Association for Workers' Housing". In addition, he was President of the Darmstadt Music Society for many years.

From 1877 to 1888 he was the cabinet director of Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse-Darmstadt (1837-1892), who had been married to Princess Alice since 1862.

His circle of friends included numerous artists, especially musicians, including the pianist Clara Schumann and the violinist Joseph Joachim .

Becker married the pianist and singer Theodore Luise Mathilde born on September 7, 1864 . Emmerling (born April 5, 1835 in Darmstadt; † November 4, 1916 there). Their daughter Antonie "Toni" Becker (1868–1965) became the second wife of the painter Eugen Bracht (1842–1921), who grew up in Darmstadt, on June 9, 1895 .
