Ernst Dopp (born December 22, 1858 in Rostock ; † April 17, 1929 there ; full name: Ernst August Friedrich Dopp ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Ernst Dopp, son of the master saddler Ludwig Dopp and Maria geb. Baas, attended the large city school in Rostock from 1868 , where he was particularly influenced by the rector and Latin teacher Karl Ernst Hermann Krause . So after graduating from high school at Easter 1878, Dopp moved to the University of Rostock to study classical philology and history. In the fourth semester, a scholarship enabled him to stay at the Berlin University , where Dopp attended courses with Harry Bresslau , Johann Gustav Droysen , Adolf Kirchhoff , Carl Robert , Heinrich von Treitschke and Wilhelm Wattenbach . In the autumn of 1880 Dopp returned to Rostock, where he was accepted into the historical seminar of Friedrich Wilhelm Schirrmacher . A year later, Gustav Körte and Georg Kaibel also accepted him into the archaeological and philological seminar.

It was also Kaibel who inspired Dopp to write his PhD thesis Quaestiones de marmore Pario (“Investigations on Marble Parium ”), with which Dopp received his doctorate in 1883. This work was made possible because Kaibel had obtained a copy of the fragments of the Parium marble through Ernst Maass . Dopp's font was highly praised by experts, especially after the inadequate edition by Hans Flach .

After completing his studies, Dopp worked as a teacher at the large city school in Rostock, where he was promoted to high school professor. In addition to teaching, he dealt with school history and ancient geographers. From 1900 to 1909 he published three writings on Ephoros of Kyme as a scientific supplement to the school news ( The geographical studies of Ephorus ). In 1924, Dopp retired.
