Ernst Friedrich Poppo

Ernst Friedrich Poppo (born August 13, 1794 in Guben ; † November 6, 1866 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a German classical philologist and educator .

Career

Poppo received his education at the grammar school in his hometown Guben. From 1811 he studied at the University of Leipzig . He was accepted into his Greek Society by Gottfried Hermann and the Philological Seminar by Christian Daniel Beck .

Immediately after his doctorate on March 2, 1815, he received his habilitation on the basis of his "Observationes criticae in Thucydidem". In 1816 he returned to Guben as vice-principal of the grammar school there, but shortly afterwards switched to the grammar school in Frankfurt (Oder), where he became director in 1818 and remained in this position until 1863.

In addition to his work as a teacher, he also prepared an edition of Thucydides , which was then published between 1821 and 1840 in four sections with a total of eleven volumes.
