Ernst Geissler
Ernst Dietrich Geissler (born August 3, 1915 in Chemnitz , German Empire , † June 3, 1989 in Huntsville , Alabama ) was a German-American engineer and space pioneer .
Life
Ernst Geissler was born on August 3, 1915 in Chemnitz in what was then the Kingdom of Saxony . He studied at the Technical University of Dresden and graduated in 1939 with a diploma.
In 1940 Geissler team members was rocket development of Wernher von Braun in Peenemünde Army Research Center . There he was the head of a mathematicians group responsible for calculating trajectories and flight paths.
After the Second World War , Geissler came to the USA in November 1945 as part of Operation Paperclip . In 1960 he became director of the aeroballistic division at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) , a position he still held in early 1969, the year the Apollo 11 mission landed on the moon . One of the employees reporting to him at MSFC was Jesco von Puttkamer .
Ernst Geissler received the NASA Certificate of Appreciation in 1973 and was also awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal . The American Astronautical Society named him a Fellow for his great contributions to space travel .
He died on June 3, 1989 in Huntsville, Alabama.
