Ernst Heiss

Ernst Heiss (* 24. June 1936 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian entomologist (Entomologist) with a focus on aradidae ( Aradidae ).

Life

He attended elementary schools in Hatting and Reith near Seefeld and from 1947 to 1951 the Bundesrealschule Innsbruck . after graduation, he moved to the structural engineering department of the higher technical teaching and research institute in Innsbruck. During this time he was five times Austrian national champion in javelin and shot put. After completing his training, he moved to the Technical University of Munich in 1956, which he graduated in 1959 as a graduate engineer. In 1960 Ernst Heiss married. He initially stayed in Munich and later moved to Innsbruck where he founded his own architectural office in 1965. In 1987 he handed the office over to his employees. In 1990 he became a Registered Consultant of the International Development Organization ( IDA ) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization ( UNIDO ). The year before, he had enrolled at the Natural Science Faculty of the University of Innsbruck . In 1992 he received his diploma here with taxonomic studies on palaearctic Piesmatidae (Insecta: Heteroptera) taking into account morphology, biology and ecology . In mid-1992 he received his master's degree. nat. and in 1995 he did his doctorate with Taxonomic Studies on Aradidae (Insecta: Heteroptera) in Innsbruck. In 1999 he became chairman of the Austrian Society for Entomofaunistics .

Ernst Heiss has a collection of 100,000 bugs, around 30,000 of which are Aradidae. This is one of the most important private collections in the world. He has published 306 entomological papers in which 72 new genera and 243 recent species as well as 25 genera and 72 fossil species of heteropterans were described.

  • 1994: Honorary member of the Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck
  • 2017: Fabricius Medal of the German Society for General and Applied Entomology
