Ernst Hugo Berger

Ernst Hugo Berger (as a book author often only Hugo Berger , born October 6, 1836 in Gera , † September 27, 1904 in Leipzig ) was a German classical philologist and historical geographer .

Ernst Hugo Berger studied at the Thomas School in Leipzig until 1856 . From 1856 to 1862 he studied classical philology and theology at the University of Leipzig . From 1862 to 1866 he worked as a teacher at various schools in Leipzig. The marriage to Emilie Seidler, daughter of August Seidler , enabled him to live as a private scholar since 1866 thanks to the wealth of his wife. In 1869 he was at the University of Leipzig with the work The geographical fragments of Hipparchus in Historical Geography Dr. phil. PhD. From 1899 to 1904 he was Professor of Historical Geography at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig. He was a corresponding member of the Thuringian-Saxon Association for Geography. In 1890 he was accepted as a full member of the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences . His History of the Scientific Geography of the Greeks became the standard work in the field of ancient geography.
