Ernst Johann Eitel

Ernst Johann Eitel (born February 13, 1838 in Esslingen am Neckar ; † November 10, 1908 in Adelaide , Australia ) was a German Protestant missionary in China and author of a Cantonese dictionary.

Life

Born as the son of a cook , Eitel studied theology in Tübingen after attending the pedagogy in Esslingen and the theological seminar in Schönthal . During his studies in 1856 he became a member of the Nordland Tübingen fraternity . After a year as a parish vicar in the Württemberg church service, he became a missionary and prepared for this in 1861 in the Basel mission . In 1862 he went to China for the Basel Mission in Lilong . In 1865 he became secretary of the London Mission Society in Hong Kong , where he transferred to the English government service in 1875 and was in charge of all the English government schools located there. He was responsible for ensuring that religious education found its way into the education system there. During this time he wrote numerous papers and was among other things editor of the China Review . In 1881/82 he worked as private secretary to the Hong Kong governor . After his retirement in 1896, he moved to South Australia in 1897 , where he took over the pastorate at St. Stephen's Congregation in Adelaide. At the University of Adelaide he was professor / lecturer for German language and literature .
