Ernst Krause (musicologist)
Ernst Krause (born May 28, 1911 in Dresden , † August 8, 1997 in Berlin ) was a German musicologist and opera critic .
Life
Born in Dresden, Krause studied German and art history at the University of Frankfurt am Main . As a music critic, he first published for the Frankfurter General-Anzeiger . In 1939 he moved to his hometown and worked as a journalist for the Dresdner Nachrichten . From 1945 he was the cultural editor of the Saxon newspaper . From 1952 Krause worked as a critic of the Daily Rundschau , from 1955 on the National-Zeitung and from 1958 on Sonntag .
In 1955 Krause published his Strauss studies Richard Strauss - Gestalt und Werk (which were translated into six languages) and later Richard Strauss - The Last Romantic . His compendium Opera from A – Z , which was published in numerous editions, is considered to be the standard work .
In his books, Ernst Krause was not satisfied with abstracting the life of the composer from three and a half centuries; he followed the trail of their work and its significance in the past and present.
Honors
- In 1964 Krause was appointed Vice President of the International Richard Strauss Society in Vienna.
- On January 27, 1987, he received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the Humboldt University in Berlin
