Ernst Kurth (born December 10, 1941 in Klietz ) was a soccer player and soccer coach in the area of the GDR soccer association (DFV) . With BSG Motor Suhl he reached the top division of the DFV, the GDR league, for one season in 1984 .

Kurth began his football career as an eight-year-old player with the BSG unit Osterburg . There he last played in 1962/63 in the third-class district league Magdeburg . For the 1963/64 season, Kurth moved to SC Potsdam in the second-rate GDR league . From 1964 to 1968 he was in the district league team of BSG Stahl Hennigsdorf .

As a player, Kurth began working as a coach in 1965. At first he worked in the youth division of Stahl Hennigsdorf, in 1973 he took over the training of the first team, which meanwhile played in the GDR league. With her he knocked in the 1976/77 season for the first time in the league when the team was league relay winner. In the promotion round to the Oberliga Hennigsdorf could not prevail. After a disappointing 8th place in the following season, Kurth left Hennigsdorf in June 1978. For the 1978/79 season he was coach of the GDR league club BSG Chemie Premnitz . After two seasons he rose with Premnitz in 1980 in the district league.

With the 1980/81 season, Kurth, who had meanwhile also completed an engineering degree, took over the GDR league club BSG Motor Suhl. The Thuringians had only just been able to save themselves from relegation in the previous season, but Kurth managed to lead the team to the relay victory within a year. But like Stahl Hennigsdorf in 1977, Suhl could not assert himself in the promotion round. After two 3rd places in 1982 and 1983, the league promotion succeeded. Kurth had succeeded in forming a homogeneous team with talented young players around the league experienced Walter Jänicke , Klaus Schröder and Erhard Mosert . Nevertheless, the level of play was not enough for the first class, and with only one win, three draws and 22 defeats, Motor Suhl was relegated back to the GDR league after a year. Kurth also took over the team for the new GDR league season 1985/86, but had to leave at the end of 1985 after the Suhlers had to accept seven defeats in the 17 first round games and had only achieved four wins.

In January 1986 Kurth became the coach of the GDR league team at Motor Babelsberg . While the team was still third in 1985, they sank under Kurth in the following years in midfield and reached their lowest point in 1988 with 11th place. As a result, BSG Motor Babelsberg separated from Kurth, who was then no longer active in higher-class football.
