Klaus Schröder (soccer player)
Klaus Schröder (born December 8, 1954 in Meilitz ) is a former German soccer player. In the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , he played for FC Carl Zeiss Jena , FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt and BSG Motor Suhl .
Athletic career
He began playing soccer at BSG level in 1963 when building Gera-Leumnitz. From 1967 to 1968 he was active at BSG Wismut Gera and from 1968 at BSG Aktivist Roßleben, from which he was delegated to the junior league team of FC Carl Zeiss Jena in 1971. There Schröder developed into a junior national player despite the late change to a football club . He played his first international match in this age group on September 22, 1972. In the game between Hungary and GDR (1: 2), he was substituted on in the 57th minute. Another four missions followed and in 1973 the FCC player was part of the DFV selection , which took second place at the UEFA youth tournament in Italy.
A month after his first international junior game, Schröder made his debut in the GDR league. On October 21, 1972, the 17-year-old was sent to the field by coach Hans Meyer in the 70th minute of the match on the 6th Bundesliga match day of the 1972/73 season between FC Carl Zeiss and BFC Dynamo (3: 1) . This season, the 1.75 meter tall Schröder made two further short appearances on matchdays 24 and 26. In the 1973/74 season he played exclusively with the 2nd team in the second-rate GDR league . From 1974/75 Schröder was officially part of the FC Carl Zeiss league team, but had to be content with the role of a substitute player. Although he was used in 18 of the 26 Bundesliga point games played, he only played nine encounters as a right striker over 90 minutes. In the 1975/76 season he made the breakthrough to a regular player with 24 point games and was set on the far right as an attacker. In 1976/77, coach Meyer tended to use Schröder mainly as a left striker, who this time made 23 appearances. At the same time he continued his international career with four international B matches . In the 1977/78 season, Schröder's career at FC Carl Zeiss came to an unexpected end. Coach Meyer treated Schröder only substitute players and only used him eight times in the league between the 1st and 18th matchdays, none of these games played Schröder for the full duration. At the end of the season, Schröder ended his involvement with FC Carl Zeiss Jena, for whose first team he had played 99 competitive games (76 league games, 10 goals - 16 national cup games, 4 goals - 7 European cup games) and scored 14 goals within seven years.
In the summer of 1978, the GDR Football Association approved Schröder's move to the upper division FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt. Under coach Manfred Pfeifer , Schröder was set as a left winger from the start of the season and played 22 top division points in his first season in Erfurt. For the 1979/80 season Pfeifer took him back to midfield, and Schröder was again part of the team with 23 point appearances. On May 17, 1980, he was with FC Rot-Weiß in the final of the GDR soccer cup . Playing in central midfield, he and his team lost 3-1 to his former club Carl Zeiss Jena in extra time. In 1980/81 Schröder suffered another slump in his career. He played only nine league games this season, only five of them over the full playing time. In the first half of the 1981/82 season, Schröder played his last league game for FC Rot-Weiß. On November 14, 1981, the 10th matchday, he was in the match between FC Carl Zeiss Jena - FC Rot-Weiß (2: 2) again in the last 10 minutes in the Erfurt league team. It was his 55th league game for Erfurt, four times he had scored a goal.
In the first half of 1982 Schröder played with BSG Motor Rudisleben in the GDR league and then switched to direct league competitor BSG Motor Suhl. Just one year later he returned to the league, because at the end of the 1983/84 season Motor Suhl had made it to the top class. Of the 30 league and promotion round games played, Schröder had played 29 games. For the league season 1984/85 coach Ernst Kurth had planned Schröder for the midfield, and there he played 20 point games in changing positions. With this season, Schröder's senior league career ended for good, because Motor Suhl did not manage to stay in the league and after only one year had to relegate to the second division, from which there was no promotion later. Schröder played six more seasons for Suhl in the GDR league. In the 1985/86 season he took over the office of team captain for one year, during the 1988/90 season he ended his career as a competitive athlete. In his eleven league seasons he made 151 appearances and scored 14 goals.
