The Markuskapelle Altenberg is a chapel in Altenberg , a district of the municipality of Odenthal in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), which originally belonged to the Altenberg Abbey and was built in 1225. The Markuskapelle is a fine example of the architecture of the Rhenish transition style .

history

The Markuskapelle lies between the Altenberg Cathedral and the kitchen courtyard within the immunity of the former monastery. It is the only one of the former chapels that has survived in the sources on the history of the monastery. The building was built in 1225 on older foundations that were found during excavations in 1895. Three burials were also found inside: a sarcophagus made of red sandstone and two made of tuff stone masonry . Around 1752 an upper storey was added, resulting in a uniform eaves line with the business wing on the west, in which the Altenberger Hof restaurant is now located . After the dissolution of the monastery in 1803, the chapel was completely neglected. She served u. a. as a forge and was last used as a tool shed. In 1897, the Rhenish Provincial Parliament granted a grant of 6,000 marks for the restoration of the building. Under the direction of the royal building officer Friedrich Carl Heimann , the chapel was completely restored in 1899 and 1900. The total cost of the work was 9,000 marks.

architecture

You enter the single-nave chapel through the portal on the south side. The building made of Grauwackebruchstein has a six-pass window on the north side , and the five sides of the eastern polygon each have a pointed arch window . Remnants of the painting dating from the second quarter of the 13th century have been preserved and were reconstructed around 1900 by the restorer Anton Bardenhewer. The arch field on the west wall shows an early Gothic mural depicting the coronation of Mary . When the building was repaired around 1900, the cornice with roof, the south portal and the surrounding pointed arch frieze were renewed. In front of the inner east wall there is a new tabernacle in the place of an old sepulchrum .

Stained glass window

Since only the smallest remains of the original lead glass windows were left, new historicist windows were created by the glass painting workshop Schneiders & Schmolz from Cologne during the repairs around 1900 . The six-pass window opposite the entrance shows Mary with the dead Christ in the central medallion, the circumferential inscription reads: “ORA PRO NOBIS MATER DOLOROSISSIMA”. The six outer smaller medallions show scenes from the life of Mary, which together with the inner medallion represent the Seven Sorrows of Mary . The five windows in the eastern part of the chapel show the enthroned Christ in the middle , who is framed on the right and left by Mary, John the Baptist and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and Engelbert .
