Ernst Nottbohm

Ernst Friedrich Nottbohm (born March 11, 1879 in Wackerwinkel , † November 28, 1942 in Hamburg ) was a German food chemist .

Life

Nottbohm attended the Realgymnasium Celle and after graduating from the university of Tübingen and Berlin studied under Emil Fischer and Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff . He then worked as an assistant to Edgar Wedekind in Tübingen.

From January 2, 1905, he worked at the Hygienic State Institute in Hamburg until his death . He passed the state examination in food chemistry with Heinrich Beckurts in Braunschweig.

During his military service in World War I , he took part in missions against France, Russia, Romania and Italy. In France he led the Goslar Jäger Battalion before Verdun . For his work, Nottbohm received both classes of the Iron Cross and the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords.

As a scientist, Nottbohm was particularly concerned with coffee and milk and its by-products and was a member of the international cheese commission and the international milk powder commission.

From 1935 to 1936 he was editor of the magazine for food analysis , the later magazine for food analysis and research (ZLUF).

From 1939 he was chairman of the Association of German Food Chemists. In 1940 Ernst Nottbohm was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In the same year he received the Joseph König commemorative coin from the Society of German Chemists .
