Joseph King commemorative coin
The Joseph König commemorative coin is a science award from the Society of German Chemists for the subject of food chemistry . The award was donated in 1934 by the then "Association of German Food Chemists". It reminds - so it says in the foundation statute - “of the secret government councilor Professor Dr.-Ing. Eh Dr. phil.nat. hc Dr. agr. hc Dr. med. hc Joseph König (1843–1930), the meritorious old master of food chemistry ”.
König was a student of Justus Liebig ; he is considered to be one of the founders of food chemistry. Since 1951, the medal has been awarded by the board of the Society of German Chemists to national and foreign personalities who have made special contributions to scientific development and the promotion of food chemistry.
In addition to the bronze medal, the winner receives a certificate and a sum of money (€ 7,500, as of 2011).
