Hans Steinhart (born March 14, 1940 in Munich ) is a German agricultural scientist , biochemist and emeritus at the Institute for Food Chemistry at the University of Hamburg .

Career

Hans Steinhart first studied agricultural sciences at the Technical University of Munich and graduated in 1964 with a diploma. He then studied biochemistry at the ETH Zurich , where he also received his diploma in 1968. In 1972 Steinhart received his doctorate in natural sciences from the Technical University of Munich . His doctoral supervisor was Manfred Kirchgeßner . In the following years he was a professor at the University of Kassel . In 1977 he qualified as a Dr. agr. habil. again at the Technical University of Munich, where he was then Academic Director and finally Associate Professor . From 1983 until his retirement in 2006 he worked as a professor at the University of Hamburg and during the same period was the managing director of the Institute for Biochemistry and Food Chemistry. He was visiting professor at Kobe Gakuin University in Japan , Osaka City University in Japan and Zhejiang University in Hangzhou China . From 2007 to 2010 he was Vice President of the newly founded Korean German Institute of Technology (KGIT) in Seoul / Korea. He is also a commercial chemist at HK Hamburg .

Research priorities

Steinhart carried out research with a focus on quantitative structure-activity relationships and the analysis of food ingredients such as fatty acids , secondary plant substances and melanoidins . He also dealt with the characterization of flavors , their interactions with other ingredients and ingredients and their manipulation as well as with steroid hormones in foods, their analysis and content.

Memberships

Hans Steinhart is a member of the following scientific societies : Society of German Chemists (GDCh), Food Chemistry Society, International Society of Tryptophan Research (ISTRY), Society for Nutritional Physiology, German Society for Fat Research, German Society for Biological Chemistry and the New York Academy of Science .

From 1993 to 1998 he held the office of chairman of the Food Chemical Society, a subgroup of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh). Between 1994 and 1997 he was a member of the executive board of the GDCh . 1998 - 2006 he was President of ISTRY, he is the National Delegate of the “Food Chemistry Division” of the “Federation of European Chemical Societies FECS” and the “International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST)”.

Cooperations

Hans Steinhart cooperated with the Hamburg company Lucas Meyer - The Lecithin People in the fields of fats , coffee , vitamins , components of skin creams, lecithins , the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche , Hermsen and the Hamburg-based companies Beiersdorf , Tchibo , Unilever . In addition, his institute has received funding for five projects to date from the Research Group of the Food Industry (FEI), Graduate CollegeBiotechnology ” and the SFB 188 “Cleaning Contaminated Soils” ( soil remediation ).

Prizes and awards

In 1998 Hans Steinhart received the "Musajo Memorial Medal" from the International Study Group for Tryptophan Research. In 1999 the medal of the University of Helsinki, Finland followed. 2000 then the Normann Medal of the DGF . Two years later in 2002 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class . The Henneberg-Lehmann Prize followed in 2001, followed in 2005 by the GDCh Joseph König commemorative coin , named after the founder of food chemistry in Germany. The FEI's Hans-Dieter-Belitz-Medal followed in the same year . In 2006, the Heinrich Stockmeyer Foundation received the Hans-Jürgen-Sinell Medal. He is also a "Fellow of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology". For his efforts to improve international understanding between Germany and South Korea and to improve food safety in Asia, he was honored with a crystal trophy by Mungi Sohn .

Publications

Hans Steinhart is still active in research as an emeritus. The list of publications includes over 730 titles. His Hirsch index (h-index) is remarkably high at 33 , according to the Institute for Scientific Information .
