Friedrich Kiermeier

Friedrich Kiermeier (born July 22, 1908 in Dresden ; † December 11, 1995 in Freising ) was a German food chemist , professor at the Technical University of Munich and long-time editor of the magazine for food research and research , the most important German magazine for food chemistry. Kiermeier studied chemistry and natural sciences in Dresden. After he received his doctorate in food chemistry there in 1939, he moved to the "Reich Institute for Food Freshness" in Karlsruhe. In 1942 he became one of the co-founders of the Institute for Food Technology and Packaging in Munich, and in 1949 he moved to the German Research Institute for Food Chemistry there . In 1953 he became director of the Institute for Chemistry and Physics of the South German Experimental and Research Institute for Dairy Farming in Freising - Weihenstephan near Munich. In 1957 he became professor of milk science at the Technical University of Munich and, at the same time, director of the German Research Institute for Food Chemistry in Freising and the state dairy in Weihenstephan. 87 doctoral students completed their doctorates with Kiermeier, seven scientists carried out research with him for their habilitation. In 1974 he received the Joseph König commemorative coin from the Society of German Chemists.

Kiermeier was the author of more than 500 publications, including some volumes of the large "Handbuch der Lebensmittelchemie", which was edited by the Berlin-based food chemist Josef Schormüller .

Editor of the Journal for Food Inspection and Research (ZLUF)

Kiermeier has been with ZLUF since 1951, and since 1969 he has been editor. After his retirement in 1978, Kiermeier turned to the ZLUF, and was a full-time editor until his 85th birthday in June 1993. Under his editorship, the ZLUF also became the official organ of the “Working Party on Food Chemistry of the Federation of European Chemical Societies”. When the editor changed in 1993, the new editors wrote: "In an international comparison, the magazine is one of the leading organs of food science and should remain so (...)."
