Ernst Pfeiffer (* 1847 in Swinoujscie ; † 1917 in Jena ) was a German educator who headed the Pfeiffer Institute named after him in Jena from 1881 .

Life

Pfeiffer studied mathematics and physics in Berlin, then taught at various schools in Pomerania and East Prussia, and from 1881 was director of the higher middle school in Jena, the Pfeiffer Institute . This school was founded in 1832 by Karl Herzog, from 1876 to 1882 the logician Gottlob Frege , who was a private lecturer at the University of Jena, taught there . From 1909 the school was converted into a municipal secondary school, whose director Ernst Pfeiffer remained until 1914 (today's name (2011) is Adolf Reichwein School ). He was a member of the Masonic lodge Zur Akazie am Saalestrande and its lodge master .

The Pfeiffer method

Ernst Pfeiffer published a mathematical article on analytical number theory in the annual report of his school in 1886, to which Edmund Landau later referred. Landau called the approach used there Pfeiffer's method . Several doctoral theses under the direction of Landau had the further development of the method on the topic ( Detlef Cauer , 1914; Adolf Hammerstein , 1919; Werner Wolfgang Rogosinski , 1922). Also Johannes van der Corputs doctoral thesis in 1919 dealt with the Pfeiffer'sche method (along with Voronois method). In his work, published in 1925, Landau then described how the results for which Pfeiffer's method had previously been used can be achieved more quickly.
