Arnold Walfisz (born July 2, 1892 in Warsaw , † May 29, 1962 in Tbilisi ) was a Polish mathematician . His focus was number theory and algebra .

Life

After graduating from high school in Warsaw, he studied from 1909 to 1914 and from 1918 to 1921 in Munich , Berlin , Heidelberg and Göttingen , where he obtained his doctorate under Edmund Landau in 1921 ( On the summation functions of some Dirichletscher series , 56 pages). From 1922 to 1927 Walfisz lived in Wiesbaden . In 1927 he returned to Warsaw, became a research assistant at the university (from his habilitation in 1930 as a private lecturer) and, since this activity was unpaid, worked for the insurance company "Europa". In 1935 he founded the magazine Acta Arithmetica with Salomon Lubelski . In 1936 he went to Tbilisi and became a mathematics professor at the university there . Walfisz is the author of around 100 mathematical works, including the books listed under “Works”. He has also edited two books of Edmund Landau's writings.

In 1936 he proved Siegel-Walfisz's theorem .

Walfisz also took part in chess tournaments (2nd / 3rd place in 1912 in side tournament A in Breslau , participation in 1914 in the tournament in Mannheim that was not played to an end).
