Ernst Rösser

Ernst Rösser (born February 11, 1903 in Volkach ; † December 7, 1989 there ) was a German theologian, canon lawyer, priest and university professor.

Rösser attended elementary school in Volkach, the Progymnasium in Kitzingen and the humanistic New Gymnasium in Würzburg , where he passed the Abitur in 1922. He studied medicine and natural sciences, philosophy and theology as well as law in Würzburg, later ecclesiastical law at the Pontifical Gregorian University and law at the Humboldt University in Berlin , there in particular the history of canon law. After becoming a Dr. theol. and Dr. jur. can. After receiving his doctorate, he completed his habilitation in 1937 at the University of Würzburg . During his studies, he was already active as a chaplain in several places in the diocese of Würzburg , as an assistant and sub-regens at the Episcopal Seminary in Würzburg. During his student days in Berlin he was the chaplain at the Franziskus Hospital there . From 1942 to 1945 he was pastor in Kitzingen, then prosynodal judge, vice-official and official of the Episcopal Marriage Court in Würzburg. In 1940 Rösser was appointed lecturer for canon law at the University of Würzburg, in 1945 he was appointed professor for canon law at the Philosophical-Theological University of Regensburg , where he was elected rector in 1947. On September 16, 1947, he moved to the University of Würzburg as a full professor of canon law, where he was rector from 1948 to 1950 and dean of the theological faculty from 1952 to 1953, until he retired in 1971. In 1954, he turned down an appointment to the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . In addition, Rösser was chairman of the university association group and the international office of the University of Würzburg in the 1950s and was appointed papal house prelate in 1958. From 1956 to 1961 he was a member of the Bavarian Senate .
