Ernesto Remani (born February 6, 1906 in Meran , South Tyrol , † December 12, 1966 in Frankfurt am Main ) was an Italian - German film director . At the beginning of his career in the Third Reich he mainly worked under his real name Ernst Rechenmacher .

Life

After a few years in the catering sector, Rechenmacher became an assistant to Luis Trenker in the late 1920s . From 1923 to 1928 he was a member of the Fascist Party of Italy . Until the 1930s, he took on minor jobs in film and was seen in a few films in small roles. In National Socialist Germany he was particularly encouraged as a politically persecuted South Tyrolean. In 1934 he joined the Reichsfachschaft film in the specialist group "film production manager". In 1935 Remani was deployed with the Alpini in the Abyssinian War. In Germany, he first took over as assistant director for the film Vergiß mein nicht in 1935 and worked as an assistant director and producer for various films until 1945, especially at Itala-Film . Rechenmacher had been permanently employed by Bavaria Filmkunst since 1940 and worked as a producer in the occupied Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia .

In the option question , he had made contradicting statements, probably following the respective requirements, according to which he had opted for both Italy and Greater Germany. Remani had Italian citizenship again in 1945 and appeared after 1945 mainly under his stage name. After the end of the Second World War , he founded the production company Refi . In 1947 he directed for the first time - the comedy L'isola del sogno was created . Remani also shot in Paraguay , Brazil and Argentina in the following years . His film Sob o Céu da Bahia ran in 1956 in the competition at the Cannes Film Festival , in which Remani was awarded the Grand prix technique as a director .

In 1957, Remani shot Die Schönste, his only feature film for DEFA . The film was the first completely banned DEFA film and until 1959 without the involvement of Remanis, who was banned from entering the GDR in 1957 , cut several times and partly re-shot. The most beautiful was only premiered in 2002. The film was Remani's last directorial work. He later worked at Transit Film as head of the newsreel / documentary department and died in Frankfurt am Main in 1966.
