Ernst Reinhold Schmidt (born October 8, 1819 in Soldau ; † November 28, 1901 in Philadelphia ) was a German teacher who emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1848 . He was the first German-American to write a history of the American Civil War .

Life

After graduating from the Altstädtischer school in Konigsberg Schmidt studied at the University of Königsberg Evangelical Theology . In the summer semester of 1841 he became a member of the Corps Masovia . With his corps brothers he was considered "spirited and spirited". Following the example of Johann Gottfried Seume , he wandered with Ernst Balduhn for four months through Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Rhineland in 1843 . After the failure of the German Revolution , the “radical forty-eight” emigrated to the United States in 1848 . Schmidt taught science and the German language at Burlington College in New Jersey. He published a geographic study of the Great Salt Lake Valley in Petermann's Geographical Notes and was an observer at the Smithsonian Institution's weather station in New Jersey. In 1869 he gave a German speech at the “Humboldt-Säcular-Celebration” of the German Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia . He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Burlington Lodge and corresponding secretary of the German Pioneer Association of Philadelphia.

Schmidt was the first German-American to publish a history of the American Civil War that appeared in German both in the United States and in Germany. The popular representation represents the position of the Republican Party. He also wrote a sequel to Emma Willard's History of the United States of North America in German.
