Ernst Ruh

Ernst Alfred Ruh (born February 23, 1936 ) is a Swiss mathematician .

Ernst Ruh completed a PhD with Nomizu Katsumi in 1964 with the thesis On the Automorphism Groups of a G-structure at Brown University , an Ivy League university in Providence , the capital of the US state Rhode Island . He was a mathematics professor at Ohio State University , one of the largest universities in the USA, and professor of mathematics at the University of Basel (1987/89). In 1990 Ernst Ruh became a full professor of mathematics at the University of Friborg (Switzerland); he succeeded Josef Schmid . In 2006 he retired.

The focus of his research is differential geometry . The Gromow-Ruh theorem is named after him, according to which every almost flat manifold is an infranil manifold .

He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
