Josef Schmid (mathematician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Schmid (born May 31, 1925 ; † June 27, 2013 in Feldkirch ) was an Austrian mathematician .

Schmid received his doctorate in 1952 at the University of Innsbruck and worked there as a university lecturer. This was followed by a two-year study visit to Princeton University with Albert William Tucker . There he also heard lectures from Emil Artin . In 1965 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Friborg (Switzerland), and in 1967 he was appointed full professor of mathematics. From 1973 to 1974 he was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Freiburg. In 1990 he was retired; his successor was Ernst Ruh .

The main focus of teaching and research was differential geometry , algebraic geometry , algebraic topology and homological algebra . Saunders Mac Lane thanked Schmid for help with the creation of his basic work "Homology" .

Schmid's work A remark on characteristic polynomials from 1970, which was mentioned in 2002 in the overview Gems of Exposition in Elementary Linear Algebra , is still occasionally used in introductions to linear algebra today.
