Ernst Schiess (organ expert)

Ernst Schiess (born October 16, 1894 in Rapperswil , † July 17, 1981 in Bern ; resident in Herisau ) was a Swiss musician , organ consultant and music teacher .

Life

Ernst Schiess was the son of Gustav Anton Schiess, engine driver , and Katharina Gantenbein. Schiess himself remained single. He first completed an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic in Zurich . From 1918, he graduated in Solothurn a training for musicians ( cello and organ). In 1923 the first orders came as an organ consultant. From 1933 Schiess worked full-time as an expert in organ building , bells and acoustics in Bern. From 1939 to 1963 he was a lecturer in acoustics and organ building at the Conservatory for Music in Bern . He advocated turning away from the orchestral organ, for clear dispositions and pipe scales that take into account the acoustic conditions of the room.
