Ernst Schmidt (born March 2, 1830 in Ebern ; † August 26, 1900 in Chicago ) was a German-American physician and social revolutionary .

Life

Ernst Schmidt was born as the son of the pharmacist and later mayor and member of the state parliament Georg Michael Schmidt (1799–1865) and his wife Maria Kunigunda, nee. Rumpf (1804–1838), born in Ebern in Lower Franconia. The pharmacist and professor of chemistry Ernst Friedrich Felix Rumpf was his grandfather and godfather, the chemist and mineralogist Ludwig Rumpf was his uncle. Schmidt studied medicine in Würzburg . 1848 he became co-founder and a few semesters spokesman of the connection Palladia / Teutonia , later fraternity Arminia Würzburg .

Because of his involvement in the political unrest in 1848 , the young student had to flee to Switzerland and finished his studies there at the University of Zurich . After the amnesty decree by the Bavarian king , Schmidt settled as a private lecturer at the University of Würzburg. However, he was denied promotion here several times, and so after his marriage in the fall of 1855 he went to England and from there to Chicago the following spring.

Here Schmidt worked as a doctor and took an active part in political life. He took part in the American Civil War, but returned to Chicago in 1862.

During a visit to his Bavarian homeland in 1866 he was offered a professorship, but now he declined and returned to Chicago with his family. In 1879, Schmidt stood as a candidate for the Labor Party for mayoral elections and received 12,000 votes.

Ernst Schmidt died at the age of 70 after many years of suffering, leaving behind a widow and four sons, two of whom also became doctors.

The Eberner Realschule was named after him.
