Ernst Schmied (* 1924 ; † March 22, 2002 ) was a Swiss mountaineer . Together with Jürg Marmet , he managed the second ascent of Mount Everest on May 23, 1956 . Both were the first Swiss to climb the highest mountain on earth.

Schmied had already climbed all the major walls of the Bernese Oberland and was a member of the third Swiss Everest expedition in 1956 , where he was responsible for food and drink.

Schmied's wife Dora was the sister of his team colleague Hansruedi von Gunten . Schmied operation in Bern a store (Leder Schmied) on the Genfergasse.
