The trunk line 6 is a long-term planned light rail line in Düsseldorf . It is intended to connect Düsseldorf Central Station with the Medienhafen .
Course and route
According to the local transport plan of the city of Düsseldorf (2002–2006), an approx. 3.5 km long route from the main train station to the Düsseldorf Media Harbor is planned. According to these plans, this line should not be an inner city tunnel with access routes, as is common in Düsseldorf. Rather, the trunk line 6 would run completely underground. As things stand, six underground stations are planned. A common use of the tracks by several lines is not intended. After completion, the travel time from the main train station to Franziusplatz should be just 7 minutes.
A subway connection at the Medienhafen would also have a positive effect on the region. Nevertheless, the implementation of the route is only realistic in the long term, as a separate depot and workshop must be built for a completely independent line. In addition, there are no plans to shut down the tram route on Graf-Adolf-Strasse , so that a route would only be worthwhile in the Hammer Strasse area.

As an alternative to a “full subway”, there are considerations to build a simple inner city tunnel, which should begin north of the main train station and end south of Franziusplatz and connect to today's tram route to Düsseldorf-Hamm .
According to current plans, this tunnel would replace the tram route from the main train station to the state parliament and on to Fährstraße in the Bilk district and would be used by conventional low-floor vehicles (similar to the Wehrhahn line ). Thus, a new depot could be dispensed with, as the existing depots can still be used.
To the south of Franziusplatz, at the end of the tunnel, a new line would be built to the existing tram route in the direction of Neuss .
