Ernst Steinemann

Ernst Steinemann (born October 7, 1888 in Opfertshofen , Schaffhausen , † November 4, 1972 in Schaffhausen) was a Swiss teacher , author and local historian .

life and work

Ernst Steinemann grew up with five siblings in a family of farmers and craftsmen in Obertshofen and trained as a teacher at the Protestant teacher training college Muristalden from 1905 to 1909 .

After teaching at the local model school for a year, at the request of his parents, he returned to Opfertshofen, where he taught at the comprehensive school there for three and a half years and at the Emmersberg School from 1913 to 1923.

Steinemann then studied at the University of Neuchâtel and at the University of Zurich and graduated with a teaching degree . From 1925 to 1956 Steinemann worked at the boys' secondary school in Schaffhausen.

Steinemann wrote numerous publications in the field of Schaffhausen history and in 1925 he joined the Schaffhausen Historical Society. There he was a board member from 1934 to 1959 and president from 1949 to 1953.

In 1955, Steinemann was commissioned by the Schaffhausen City Council to centralize and rebuild the city archive, which was kept in five partially unsuitable locations, according to modern principles.

In 1956 Steinemann was elected semi-official city archivist of Schaffhausen. He held this position until 1970. Steinemann was appointed a corresponding member in 1966 by the working group for southwest German urban history research in Tübingen .
