Kurt Bächtold (born November 13, 1918 in Merishausen ; † October 30, 2009 in Schaffhausen ) was a Swiss journalist , local historian and politician ( FDP ).

biography

The son of a secondary school teacher studied history and classical philology at the University of Zurich from 1939 to 1946 and did his doctorate . From 1947 to 1968 he worked as an editor for the Schaffhauser Nachrichten . As a journalist, he campaigned heavily against the construction of the Rheinau power plant, which he described in articles as a “cultural disgrace”. Between 1957 and 1961 he was also President of the Schaffhausen Historical Society. From 1968 to 1983 he was head of the Schaffhausen City Library. In this function he was in charge of the cataloging and scientific processing of the estates of the brothers Johannes von Müller and Johann Georg Müller . He was the author of numerous publications on the history of the city and the history of the Klettgau .

politics

He began his political career 1948–1952 as a member of the Grand City Council of Schaffhausen. In 1961 he was elected a member of the Council of States as a candidate for the Free Democratic Party (FDP) . There he represented the interests of the canton of Schaffhausen until 1979 and was particularly involved in the areas of nature conservation , homeland security as well as state and educational policy . He was also active in the field of foreign policy and from January 1972 to May 1974 first deputy member and then until September 1978 member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . From 1975 to 1979 he was Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the Swiss National Science Foundation.

In 1973/1974 he was President of the Council of States and thus, after Gustav Schoch , Albert Ammann , Beat Heinrich Bolli and Kurt Schoch, the fifth President of the Council of States from the canton of Schaffhausen. It was not until 2013/2014 that Hannes Germann was again held by a Schaffhausen resident.

After leaving the Council of States, he was President of the Federal Nature and Heritage Protection Commission from 1980 to 1988. In 1989 he became an honorary citizen of the Wilchingen community and in 1990 an honorary member of the historical association.
