Ernst Urbahn
Ernst Urbahn (born April 7, 1888 in Zehdenick , Brandenburg ; † January 14, 1983 there ) was a German scientist , entomologist and headmaster .
life and work
After attending school, he studied biology , geography and mathematics in Berlin , Heidelberg and Jena . He received his doctorate in 1913 with a dissertation entitled "Abdominal scent organs in female butterflies" at the University of Jena. In 1920 he married Herta Schoer (* May 3, 1900; † January 15, 1983), who became his closest colleague and who also developed extensive specialist knowledge in the field of lepidopterology .
In 1939 he and his wife published the faunistic work “The butterflies of Pomerania with a comparative overview of the Baltic Sea region” , known in professional circles for short as the “Pomeranian fauna ” , in collaboration with the Brandenburg hobby entomologist Erich Haeger . Full-time he took a path in school, in which he was initially employed in Stettin and during the Second World War in Binz .
In 1945 the Urbahn couple returned to Zehdenick. Ernst Urbahn continued to work here as a teacher and headmaster until his retirement in 1957. During his school service and afterwards he dealt very intensively with entomology and wrote around 185 publications on this subject.
Ernst and Herta Urbahn's butterfly collection is in the Natural History Museum in Berlin .
Awards and honors
- 1963: Awarded the silver Leibniz Medal of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR
- Ernst Urbahn became an honorary citizen of Zehdenick on the occasion of his 80th birthday
- Awarded the Johannes R. Becher Medal in gold
- The house at Poststrasse 14 in Zehdenick, in which the Urbahns lived from 1945 to 1983, was given a plaque,
- One street in Zehdenick was named Dr.-Ernst-Urbahn-Straße,
- The French entomologist Claude Dufay named a subspecies of the mountain heather St. John's wort tensioner ( Aplocera praeformata ) ssp. urbahni .
- Ernst Urbahn was an honorary member of a large number of domestic and foreign entomological societies.
