Ernst Walter Schmidt

Ernst Walter Schmidt (born March 11, 1894 in Breslau ; † January 5, 1981 ) was a German Protestant theologian. In Bremerhaven he was considered a "writer in the pulpit".

Life

Coming from Breslau , Schmidt entered the service of the Bremen Evangelical Church . In 1926 he was appointed pastor at the Mayor Smidt Memorial Church. During the Nazi era, he confessed to Adolf Hitler at the beginning of 1933 ; but he prevented Hermann Raschke from being replaced by a National Socialist official brother. He saved his community from slipping into the sphere of influence of the National Socialists. He also fought against pietistic hostility and advocated a liberal, undogmatic Christianity. His strength was pastoral care . He held very demanding sermons and performed as a poet and author of treatises and stage works out. In his great reading he was as familiar with Immanuel Kant as the history of theology in the 19th century and the history of the Bremen Evangelical Church. He was particularly committed to the Gustav-Adolf-Werk and to the Federation for Free Christianity . After 38 years of service in Bremerhaven, he was in 1964 at the age of 70 years emeritus . Peter Gerlitz sees him as “one of the best representatives of free Protestantism”.
