Peter Gerlitz (born June 23, 1926 in Winzig , Lower Silesia ; † January 17, 2013 in Bremerhaven ) was a German pastor and religious scholar.

Life

Gerlitz studied Protestant theology and comparative religion at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen , the Philipps University in Marburg and the Georg August University in Göttingen . With a doctoral thesis with Hans-Joachim Schoeps , he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He wrote the theological dissertation with Friedrich Heiler in Marburg, so that in 1960 he also received a D. theol. received his doctorate.

Having entered the service of the Bremen Evangelical Church , he was appointed pastor at the Mayor Smidt Memorial Church in 1962 . He completed his habilitation in 1984 at the University of Bremen for religious studies and taught as a private lecturer . In addition, he was involved in the German East Asia Mission and in the Federation for Free Christianity . Appointed honorary professor in Bremen , Gerlitz retired as pastor in 1991 after 29 years .
