Ernst Winkler (born March 11, 1955 in Schwarzach im Pongau ) is a former Austrian ski racer . The downhill specialist was twice Austrian champion and achieved four podium places in the Ski World Cup .

biography

Winkler was accepted into the squad of the Austrian Ski Association in the early 1970s . On January 11, 1975, he scored his first point in the World Cup with tenth place in the Lauberhorn run in Wengen . A week later he was also tenth on the Streif in Kitzbühel and at the beginning of February he was already sixth in Megève . At the end of the season he was Austrian downhill champion for the first time.

In the 1975/76 season , Winkler first took eighth and sixth places in the runs from Madonna di Campiglio and Wengen. But he failed in the team's internal qualification for the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck. In the last downhill of the season in Aspen , Winkler took third place for the first time on the podium and thus finished eleventh in the Downhill World Cup. He was able to successfully defend his Austrian championship title.

The 1976/77 season was Winkler's most successful: In the Kandahar descent from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and in California's Heavenly Valley , he reached second place and in the first descent from Morzine he was third. With another four top ten results, he finished fourth in the Downhill World Cup and 16th in the overall World Cup. At the Austrian championships he was beaten by just under two hundredths of a second by Franz Klammer this year .

At the beginning of next winter, Winkler had a hard crash in Val-d'Isère and the season was over for him after the first race. After that, he no longer achieved his previous performance. In the winter of 1978/79 he had to try the European Cup to gain a foothold in the World Cup. At least he managed a second place in the departure from home . In the World Cup he only achieved a top ten result once, on the downhill from Pra-Loup on January 6, 1980. After another injury at the end of winter, he ended his career in 1980.

After his skiing career, Winkler switched to football and played with SV Schwarzach in the Salzburg regional league. He and his wife run the Hotel Sonnhof in St. Veit im Pongau.
