Ertuğrul Osman

Ertuğrul Osman (born August 18, 1912 in Istanbul ; † September 23, 2009 ibid) was head of the House of Osman , which ruled the Ottoman Empire . As a result of the dissolution of the Sultanate in 1922 and the Caliphate in 1924, the family had to leave the newly established republic.

Life

Ertuğrul Osman was born in the Yıldız Palace in Istanbul as the youngest son of Prince Muhammed Burhaneddin Efendi from the marriage to his second wife Aliye Melik Nazlıyar Hanım Efendi, a daughter of Hüseyin Bey. He is the grandson of Sultan Abdülhamid II. He received his education at the Theresian Academy in Vienna and at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris . In 1924, while he was at school in Vienna, he received the message that all members of the sultan's family would have to go into exile. From 1933 he lived in the United States , most recently in Manhattan . In 1991 he married Zeynep Tarzi, the daughter of Abdulfettah Tarzis, a nephew of the former Afghan king Amanullah Khan , and Pakize Tarzis, a Turkish gynecologist from an Ottoman family. In 1992 he visited Turkey again for the first time. On March 12, 1994, with the death of his predecessor Mehmed Orhan Efendi, he became the forty-third head of the House of Osman. In 2004 he received Turkish citizenship and took “Osman” as his last name.

Ertuğrul Osman died on September 23, 2009 in Istanbul of kidney failure . The funeral prayer was performed with high participation in the Sultan Ahmed Mosque .
