Erwin Lang (painter)

Erwin Lang (born July 22, 1886 in Vienna ; † February 10, 1962 there ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .

Live and act

Erwin Lang, the son of the social worker and women's rights activist Marie Lang , attended the Vienna School of Applied Arts with Alfred Roller . He exhibited his work for the first time in 1908 at the Vienna Art Show. In 1911, Lang exhibited with Kokoschka and Schiele in an exhibition of the Hagenbund , of which he was a member . One of his essential areas was woodcuts. His woodcuts were also used for book illustration.

In 1920 he came back via China after being a prisoner of war in Russia, from which he was able to escape. He then began as a stage decorator in Vienna and Berlin .

Lang was married in his first marriage to the dancer Grete Wiesenthal . For them he designed the posters and productions. The architect Lukas Matthias Lang and the painter Konrad Lang emerged from the second marriage .
