After being a prisoner of war, he became an assistant in Heidelberg in 1947 and completed his habilitation there in 1951. After working as a private lecturer at the Mineralogy Institute of the University of Münster, he received a professorship for mineralogy and petrography at the University of Friborg in 1956 . In particular, Nickel was involved in interdisciplinary studies, especially in Christian philosophy , and published over 80 writings on this subject. He was honorary president of the Institute for Frontier Areas of Science (IGW) of Andreas Resch in Innsbruck, member of the Austrian Scientific Societies, and several times President of Imago Mundi , an international interest group for frontier areas of science.
