biography

Schmidt (coming from Nordheim) became DGB district chairman in Braunschweig in 1968. Since 1971 he has been executive chairman of the DGB in Bremen.

He was a member of the SPD in the SPD local association Horn - Achterdiek and was active in various functions. From 1975 to 1983, in the 9th and 10th electoral periods, he was a member of the Bremen citizenship for the SPD and worked in various deputations in the citizenship . In 1978 he spoke out in favor of building the Hollerland in Bremen Horn-Lehe , which was later only implemented on a smaller scale. From 1979 to 1983 he was Vice President of the Citizenship. His local club did not nominate him for election for the 11th electoral term because he held too many offices. These conflicts led to rifts between the SPD base and the Bremen DGB.

He was also DGB district chairman in Bremen and since 1979 chairman of the Broadcasting Council of Radio Bremen .
