Erwin Seidl

Erwin Seidl (born November 6, 1905 in Munich ; † April 4, 1987 ) was a German papyrologist , lawyer and legal historian .

He graduated from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1924 and then studied law. In 1929 he received his doctorate from the University of Munich with the thesis The Oath in Ptolemaic Law . In 1932 he became a private lecturer at the University of Munich. In 1935/36 he was awarded a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . In 1937 he became an associate professor in Greifswald in 1941. From January 1, 1942 to 1958, he was a full professor for Roman and German civil law at the University of Erlangen . As provisional (deputy) dean of the law and political science faculty of the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , he was a member of the Academic Senate of the Würzburg University in 1948 , where he lectured on Roman law. From 1958 to 1971 he held the chair for Roman and civil law at the University of Cologne .
