Erythemis is a genus of the subfamily Sympetrinae and was established in 1861 by Hermann August Hagen . The distribution area extends mainly over South and Central America , but sometimes also extends to the southern states of the USA .

features

Types of erythemis are 35 to 62 millimeters in size and are mainly red, blue, brown and black. The complex eyes of the representatives of the erythemis touch, but also do not merge as in some other genera of the dragonflies . The broad, flattened abdomen is slightly shorter than the wings and becomes slightly narrower apically . The abdominal appendages are short and, like the genitals , very weak. Another prominent feature compared to other genera are the three to four bristles that the erythemis species have on their femur .

Habitat

The erythemis representatives are particularly active in warm sunlight. They prefer pools, ponds, marsh and swamp land and slow-flowing streams .
