features

Construction of the Imago

The face of the erythemis collocata is green like the thorax , but the males turn ash blue with age. This change of color begins with the abdomen , ends at the thorax and lasts two to three weeks with a total of 17 intermediate stages. The abdomen is black before the change of color in the males, as in the females, with green spots on segments four to six. The cerci are black.

When fully grown, the animals reach a length between 39 and 42 millimeters, of which the abdomen takes up 23 to 30 millimeters. The wings reach a size between 30 and 33 millimeters and are transparent. The animal has eleven to twelve Antenodaladern and nine Postnodaladern .

Construction of the larvae

The larvae reach lengths between 15 and 17 millimeters and are colored green. Your abdomen is round in shape and has no bristles or spines.

nutrition

The larvae feed on insects that live in the water, such as mosquito and fly larvae. But they also eat small fish and tadpoles . The full-grown animals eat from termites , moths , butterflies to mosquitoes all flying insects that do not have too strong armor.

Scientific description

The first description of the species was provided by Hermann August Hagen under the name Mesothemis collocata in 1861 using a male from Texas . The holotype is now in the Louis Agassiz Museum of Comparative Zoology . While Philip Powell Calvert classified the species as a variation , Richard Anthony Muttkowski downgraded it to a subspecies in 1910. Friedrich Ris also took up this classification as a subspecies in 1911. However, later descriptions see Erythemis collocata again as an independent species.
