Erythrodiplax longitudinalis is a slender, small species of dragonfly from the subfamily Sympetrinae . It occurs from the Venezuelan state of Carabobo south along the Venezuelan border with Colombia . The female has not yet been described. Friedrich Ris described the species for the first time in 1919 and was sure at the time that the species belonged more to the genus Anatya . Nevertheless, he noted the similarity to othertypes of erythrodiplax when it was first described.

features

Erythrodiplax longitudinalis is a black species, the males of which reach abdomen lengths of around 18 millimeters. The male abdomen, like the thorax and legs, is black, both with yellowish markings. The face, like the lower lip, upper lip and forehead, is whitish. The forehead base spot and the parietal bladder are metallic blue-green. The transparent hind wings of the males are 22 millimeters long. Distally , both pairs of wings are tinted slightly brown. The pterostigma measures 2.2 millimeters.

Similar species

The species is particularly similar to Erythrodiplax angustipennis and Erythrodiplax anatoidea . A reliable distinction can be made via the structure of the second genital segment of the males. Erythrodiplax anatoidea also lacks the yellow lateral stripe on the thorax, as occurs in Erythrodiplax longitudinalis . Compared to Erythrodiplax angustipennis, it helps that the abdominal appendages are yellow and not white.
