features

Construction of the Imago

In males, the abdomen measures between 16.5 and 21 millimeters, while in females it tends to be shorter, reaching between 15.5 and 20 millimeters. In young males, the abdomen is yellowish brown in color and marked with brown longitudinal stripes on the sides and black on the back. The lateral strip extends from the fourth to the ninth segment and is interrupted in the front sections of the four to six segments. On the back, the stripe runs backwards from the third segment and becomes darker in the process. The abdominal appendages are yellowish brown. In the more mature males, the abdomen turns bluish black. The third and fourth segments are dusted in light blue. The abdominal appendages are dark brown. On the underside, the upper appendages are covered with six to seven small teeth, which are found in the middle third. The abdomen of the females is brown and has black markings.

While the trunk of the males is black on the back and very dark green on the sides, young males as well as females have a yellowish brown trunk. The latter also has a broad, frayed black ante-humeral stripe. The legs are dark brown in the males, in the females and the young males yellowish brown with a course in the dark brown towards the outside of the thighs .

The wings are transparent in both sexes and have a spot at the base of the wings. This is dark brown in the males and yellowish in the females. In the males, the hind wings reach a length between 21 and 25.5 millimeters, while in the females they measure between 20 and 24 millimeters. The wing mark measures around three millimeters for both sexes.

Young males and females also differ from older males in the face. Initially, the face is yellowish brown and in the young males it has a slightly bluish tinge on the forehead and the crown , which is absent in the females. The face of the older males is black with a metallic blue forehead.

Similar species

There is a similarity to two representatives of their own genus, namely the Erythrodiplax fusca and the Erythrodiplax connata . E. fusca differs in particular by its red forehead. Males can only be reliably distinguished from the second type by comparing the structure of the penis; no distinguishing feature is known for females.
